1. Are you eligible for ABLE?

Two rules. If your disability began before age 46, and you meet the SSA severity standard, you qualify. That is true whether or not you currently receive SSI or SSDI.

2. What your state will ask for.

Every state ABLE program collects the same six fields at signup. Fill them in once here and we pass them to the state portal so you don't type twice.

Your Social Security number is NOT collected here. Your state portal will ask for it directly on their secure site. We never touch it.

3. Which state plan will you use?

Every state has an ABLE program, and most accept applicants from any state. Pick your home state, or a different plan if it has features you prefer. Your ZIP code auto-suggests based on the state we recognized.

4. You're ready.

Here is your one-tap link to your state portal with your name, email, and ZIP pre-filled through URL parameters that the portal accepts. Once you land on the state site, they will ask for your SSN and disability documentation.

You'll be taken to the state portal in a new tab. Your data is passed as URL parameters. Keep this tab open in case you want to come back.

What happens next?

The state portal will ask for these additional items you can prepare now:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Proof your disability began before age 46, such as an SSA award letter, physician certification, or benefits determination letter
  • A bank routing number and account number if you plan to auto-contribute
  • A trusted-person designation (parent, sibling, spouse, or paid representative)

Most people complete their state signup in 10 to 15 minutes.

What if my state portal asks for something I don't have?

Free help is available. Your state's Vocational Rehabilitation agency, a WIPA Certified Work Incentives Counselor, or a Protection & Advocacy attorney can walk you through any missing document, at no cost. Find yours at Referral Network.

Can REACHABLE just do the signup for me?

Not yet, and here's why. Every state ABLE program is administered by that state's treasury office under specific state law. Direct third-party account opening requires an API partnership with each state. We are pursuing a direct partnership with Ohio's STABLE platform, which already administers eleven partner-state programs, for phase-two end-to-end enrollment. Until then, we pre-fill everything a state portal accepts and hand you a shortcut link.
